Salty and Sweet = Heaven. Agree?
I am a sucker for this combo. When I was in high school I used to go to Wendy’s and order french fries to scoop out my Frosty (can’t believe I just admitted that). I haven’t been to Wendy’s lately but my cravings for this killer combo have not wained over time. Given the abundance of Halloween candy the kids scored I thought I would experiment with some candy and popcorn and make:
So after they went to bed one night I raided their buckets (oh don’t pretend you don’t!) and collected all the fun size Snickers I could find. Snickers happen to be gluten free so taking the GF husband into consideration I knew this would be the best candy to work with.
First I popped the popcorn. I used good ol’ Orville.
I read a couple of recipes that I found on Pinterest for candy popcorn but they all involved caramel which I didn’t have so I improvised. Instead of chopping up the candy and adding the pieces whole I decided to melt it and use it instead of the caramel.
I added about:
6 fun size Snickers
1/3 C. chocolate chips
1/3 C. peanut butter (never doubt that I will add peanut butter!)
1/4 C. milk (I used Almond milk but any will work)
and a little bit of coconut oil (1 Tbsp) for a smooth consistency (it will still work if you don’t have coconut oil)
***You may have to adjust the amount of milk for desired consistency
I don’t have a double boiler so here’s my solution:
I used about 2/3 of the bag of popcorn so probably 4 cups. This was plenty for Jared and I (he might argue this) and some leftover for the kids for the next day. Feel free to multiply the recipe if you’re making for a large group. Pour the sauce right over the popcorn and stir to coat.
Spread it evenly on wax paper or parchment paper on a cookie sheet and stick it in the fridge until you can’t stand it anymore and have to EAT IT NOW! (or, just enough time to let the chocolate set)
Eat to your heart’s content.
What I was surprised and loved the most about this popcorn is that it’s not overly sweet! It’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty deliciousness.
Yum.
Here are two other great ideas of what to do with your excess candy:
- Freeze it! Use it throughout the year for recipes, a sweet treat or toss it into a milkshake
- Send it to the Troops! You can enter your Zip on this website to find a participating dentist near you or send it to Operation Shoebox
But I highly suggest you pick out all the snickers first and make this popcorn 🙂
